We took the route from Beaufort west to Oudshoorn and then on to George. No roadworks on that route. Meiringspoort is also very scenic and there are various stops there where you can rest and even take a swim in the mountain pools. Well worth it. The other route over Graaff Reinette has some roadworks with a couple of stop and go points.
